The California Work & Family Coalition Calls for Inclusive Paid Family Leave in Sacramento

On April 9th, Coalition members joined together to support SB 590, authored by Senator María Elena Durazo, in the Senate Labor Committee. We are happy to share that the bill unanimously passed out of the Senate Labor Committee with bipartisan support, and the bill is moving onward in the legislative process.

Long-time coalition member, Yvette Cervantes, advocated for her chosen family, sharing that she wasn’t able to take Paid Family Leave for her son since they didn’t have a legal relationship.

SB 590 would ensure that workers, like Yvette, can access the Paid Family Leave benefits that they already pay for, to care for a member of their chosen or extended family.

Yvette Cervantes shares her testimony in front of the Senate Labor Committee.

The Fight Is On: Policy Insights 2025 Takeaways

Our California Work & Family Coalition team members Natasha Castro and Jasmine Amian attended the 2025 Policy Insights conference hosted by and celebrating the California Budget & Policy Center’s 30th Anniversary. One thing was clear: we’re in a critical fight to protect the programs that 15 million Californians rely on.

From Medi-Cal to SNAP, our communities’ safety net programs are under threat from a federal agenda that prioritizes tax breaks for the wealthy over care for our communities. In the session Protecting CA Values: Navigating Federal Processes to Combat a Harmful National Policy Agenda, Kristina Bas Hamilton (UDW/AFSCME Local 3930) reminded us: “If you’re not at the table, you’re on the menu.” It was a powerful call to action: we must mobilize, speak up, and push back, otherwise we risk seeing our programs be cut.

We left with this reminder: The time to act is now. Let's urge Congress to prioritize the basic needs of workers and families NOT corporations and the extremely wealthy. Call your member of Congress to let them know your concerns about cuts to programs that our communities rely on!

Coalition Staff Joins Immigrant Day of Action to Celebrate and Advocate for Immigrant Rights

Immigrant Day of Action is an annual event hosted by California Immigrant Policy Center (CIPC), that brings hundreds of people together across the state of California to celebrate and advocate for immigrant rights. For the first time this year, CIPC’s Immigrant Day of Action was a two day event, hosting a conference day and an advocacy day. This year’s theme was “Rise Up for Immigrant Rights: Empowering Communities, Strengthening California.”

This year, Coalition staff, Angelica Andrade and Natasha Castro were at Immigrant Day of Action (IDA). At the Coalition, we advocate to make California’s Paid Family Leave and State Disability Insurance programs more accessible for immigrant and undocumented workers; which is why it is important to defend immigrant rights and show support in spaces like IDA. We learned a lot about how to support and advocate for other issues directly related to immigrant rights.

Reminder: Advocacy Day, happening next week!

On Advocacy Day, we meet with California State Assemblymembers and State Senators to advocate on Paid Leave issues that impact workers and their families.

This year, we have important legislative priorities that would improve Paid Family Leave and other workplace protections for California workers.
