SB 63 – the New Parent Leave Act – Passed the Assembly!
Great news! Coalition priority bill, SB 63 (Jackson) the New Parent Leave Act passed out of the Assembly and is on the Governor's desk. Before the vote, many Assemblymembers spoke in passionate support - sharing personal stories of being fathers, grandparents, and local leaders and state leaders where constituents need this protection. SB 63 will extend job-protection to more new parents taking leave to bond with their children. Current law only extends job protection to workers in businesses of 50 or more employees for bonding leave. SB 63 will extend job protection to 2.7 million more workers by lowering the threshold to 20 employees. Coalition Director, Jenya Cassidy said, “This is a huge win – a big step toward equity, health, and well-being and it happened because Senator Jackson and Coalition members across the state have been fighting hard together and we refused to give up.”
Let Governor Brown know that this legislation is important to workers, families, and the health and well-being of our communities. Sign our petition today!
The "Equal Rights to Parental Leave" Event Was a Success
On August 28, the Coalition co-hosted “Equal Rights to Parental Leave: A Strong Start for All Children” with Legal Aid at Work, First Five California, the California Endowment, California Newsreel, and Common Sense for Kids Action. The event, spearheaded by Legal Aid at Work, was a hugely successful group effort engaging policymakers, advocates, health care leaders and a wide variety of organizations. Advocates and Senator Jackson spoke, saw a short clip of “Raising of America” and heard a panel of experts speak on the importance of parental leave to the development of young children. We’re looking forward to more collaboration with these organizations in 2018!

BreastfeedLA Organizes "Breastfeeding Advocacy 101"
On August 31, coalition member organization BreastfeedLA organized a training for 300 breastfeeding advocates at the California Endowment in Los Angeles. Coalition members Legal Aid at Work, ACLU SoCal, California Women's Law Center, and ROC LA held workshops on topics including family leave laws, lactation accommodations in the education sector, reproductive justice for incarcerated women, and enforcing breastfeeding and leave rights at work. In the middle of the event, attendees took a moment to send postcards to their respective representatives in the California State Assembly, and to Governor Brown urging support for SB 63 (Jackson) the New Parent Leave Act. This event was a great example of creative coalition-building, showing that diverse groups working together make a powerful impact. Thank you Breastfeed LA for your leadership and organizing a game-changing event!

Coalition Update on Education, Outreach, and Enforcement Work
Our Coalition sticks with laws after they are passed to make sure they are implemented effectively and equitably. In recent months we led a Family Leave Rights training with 25 SEIU 1021 leaders, we initiated an outreach campaign with Perinatal Services Coordinators across the state, and we stood with ROC-LA and many other SoCal partners to defend workers facing wage theft and lactation accommodation violations. Our next PFL Advocates meeting with the EDD is coming up on October 19th – let us know if you’d like to participate and share your perspective on what is needed to make Paid Family Leave work for all.
