"Zero Weeks" Coming to Berkeley and Los Angeles

Save the Dates: The California Work & Family Coalition will be hosting screenings of "Zero Weeks" in Berkeley (August 16) and Los Angeles (October 9).

"Zero Weeks" is a moving film that weaves together the stories of parents and caregivers to make a compelling argument for guaranteed paid leave for every US worker.  The film looks at paid leave from an emotional, health, economic, and global perspective.  The California screenings will feature the film and a panel discussion of the landscape and what we're doing in California to make Paid Family Leave a reality for all workers and families.

Berkeley Zero Weeks: Thursday, August 16th at 6:00 pm at the South Berkeley Senior Center (2939 Ellis St., Berkeley, CA 94703).  Park at Ashby BART.  This screening will feature local and national experts on the importance of paid leave, the growing US momentum to win paid leave for all, and local work to win universal Paid Family Leave for Berkeley workers.

Los Angeles Zero Weeks: Tuesday, October 9th at 6:00 pm (Location TBA).  Join us prior to BreastfeedLA's 2-day summit, "Taking Action to Reduce Infant Feeding Inequities in Los Angeles County: Our Collective Responsibility," for a screening of the film and hear about how we are organizing to win and implement stronger paid leave for diverse families.

Contact us at info@workfamilyca.org if you would like to join either or both events as a co-sponsor.

Working Family Caregiver Research Project: Phase 2 Begins

This month, the Coalition, in partnership with Human Impact Partners, finished the data-gathering phase of the Working Caregiver Research Project.  Thanks to our members and new partners we have heard from over 1,000 caregivers, and we connected to diverse local, state, and national groups that support caregivers and work on caregiving issues.  As HIP researchers begin to analyze and write up the project's findings for the report, we are organizing for our next steps including an in-person planning session in September.  Contact us at info@workfamilyca.org to help plan our caregiver campaign for 2019.

Coalition Groups Organize Breastfeeding Lobby Day

The California Work & Family Coalition, the California Breastfeeding Coalition, and Legal Aid at Work co-organized a breastfeeding-focused lobby day at the Capitol on May 23rd.  New parents, coalition members, and breastfeeding advocates lobbied in support of SB 937 (Wiener) -- Workplace Lactation Accommodation and AB 2785 (Rubio), a bill in support of Student Services Lactation Accommodation, sponsored by the Women's Policy Institute's Reproductive Justice Team.  The California Breastfeeding Coalition started the day with an awards ceremony recognizing employers with cutting edge lactation accommodation policies, and some of the employers joined new parents and seasoned advocates in visiting and urging their lawmakers' support for SB 937 and AB 2785.
