Exciting news! We got a matching grant of $10,000 at the end of last year to help kick start our grassroots campaign to win job protection for parents and caregivers when they take time to bond or care for loved ones. Coalition members are working together to engage people across the state in train the trainer events, district visits with local representatives, regional meetings and a lobby day in May. The funds we raise now will help us mobilize and allow diverse parents, caregivers and organizations to take the lead in winning family friendly workplaces for all. Please donate today to help us reach our goal: workfamilyca.org/donate
Coalition/EDD Partnership Success: Paid Family Leave Media Campaign Launch
In February, the Employment Development Department (EDD) launched the first statewide Paid Family Leave (PFL) media campaign since the law passed in 2002. Coalition organizations secured funds for the campaign when we worked with legislators to pass a budget bill in 2014. The PFL Advocates sub-committee gave input on the public education campaign entitled “Moments Matter.” The campaign combines radio, digital, print, and some television ads focused on family caregivers, new dads, moms, adoptive, and foster parents. Please join us on social media to raise the profile of Paid Family Leave and educate more Californians about their right to paid leave. Let’s share EDD and other PFL updates using the hashtag #CAPaidFamilyLeave and #MomentsMatter.
Become a Community Family Leave Laws Educator
Now that there is a robust media campaign, we are focused on strengthening grassroots community education on Paid Leave and paid sick days through our Los Angeles clinic-based outreach projects and in our Train the Trainer program. Our first “Train the Trainer” event will be held in Los Angeles, March 30th at St. John’s Well Child Center, 808 W 58th St. Room #A, Los Angeles, CA. RSVP here: www.workfamilyca.org/train_the_trainer
Help Win Bonding Leave for New Parents
We are organizing to expand access to Paid Family Leave for parents and caregivers. Last year, we saw support build in leaps and bounds for the New Parent Leave Bill. Because of your efforts, we’re hitting the ground running to pass SB 63 (Jackson), the New Parent Leave Act. SB 63 would extend 12 weeks of job protected leave to new parents working businesses with over 20 employees for bonding. Please send in your letters of support to Senator Jackson’s office by March 15th (templates here). SB 63 will be heard in the Senate Labor Committee, March 22, 9:30 am in room 2040. Please come to show your support for the bill!
Join Our District Visit Campaign
Coalition members in southern, central, and northern California are meeting with their state senators to talk about the importance of expanding job protection for parents and caregivers taking Paid Family Leave. Meet local coalition members, get to know your representatives, and help advocate for working families. E-mail Iris at firstname.lastname@example.org to let us know you are interested in joining a local visit.
