SB 1166 – THE NEW PARENT LEAVE BILL - PASSED THE SENATE!
Great news: Our Coalition priority bill, SB 1166 (Jackson) passed the Senate! SB 1166, the New Parent Leave bill, will expand the number of new parents who can take leave to bond with a new child – birth, adoption, or foster. Right now, over 40% of employees don’t have job protection for bonding leave. Studies show parental bonding is crucial to the well-being and healthy development of infants and young children. SB 1166 would make our leave laws more equitable and boost family economic security and employment. In spite of the clear benefits of this bill to children and families, the California Chamber of Commerce is mobilizing opposition claiming that expanding this right would be a burden on business. Our Assemblymembers need to hear from us on the importance of this bill. Join us as we lobby our representatives in the Assembly this summer.

COALITION VICTORY: EDD TO LAUNCH PAID FAMILY LEAVE MEDIA CAMPAIGN
In May, Employment Development Department (EDD) funds were awarded to Mercury LLC to launch an ambitious Paid Family Leave media/outreach campaign. This is a huge step a big victory for us - the Coalition led the campaign to secure these funds in 2014 and this will be the first substantial state-funded media effort since Paid Family Leave first passed. As we celebrate this milestone, we also acknowledge that this is only the first step. The Coalition will continue to advocate for appropriate funding for community-based, culturally competent outreach in places where awareness of Paid Family Leave is lowest. We are meeting with the EDD on this ongoing work and we are coordinating a clinic-based outreach and education pilot project in Los Angeles that can serve as a model for future efforts. E-mail us at email@example.com if you would like to help with this work.
HOW YOU CAN HELP: WE'RE RAISING FUNDS TO EXPAND OUR WORK
Due to our advocacy work, Californians’ right to Paid Family Leave and paid sick days expanded this year. The California Work & Family Coalition staff and steering committee are raising funds for our outreach and education work to ensure workers know their rights under these new laws. We plan to design and print an updated version of our popular “6 Key Laws for Working Parents” poster, hold Know Your Rights family leave laws trainings, and engaging more public health allies in our education and outreach work. Our goal is to raise $10,000.00 to design, print, and distribute the new poster. Help us reach our goal by donating today!
