2019 is going to be HUGE! Our March Newsletter

Happy March! It’s already shaping up to be a huge year for local, state, and national work on Paid Family Leave. In January, Governor Gavin Newsom announced he would make enacting six months of paid baby bonding leave for new parents a priority for the state. The Governor’s office will work with a task force on the next steps and Coalition members are looking forward to collaborating and supporting this historic expansion. Winning Inclusive Paid Family Leave In addition to supporting the Governor’s expansion of PFL, we’ll be actively supporting bills that will expand access to Paid Family Leave: SB-135 (Jackson) will extend job protection to more family caregivers and new parents when they take paid leave. AB-196 (Gonzalez) will expand wage replacement to 100% for low income workers taking paid leave. AB-406 (Limón) will require that the application for paid leave be printed in Spanish and possibly additional languages (right now there is a Spanish guide, but the actual application is in English) These bills are currently in intent language. We’ll be sending a separate update with a call to action and more details later in March. Los Angeles Council Members Propose Fully-Paid Leave Staff from Councilmember Nury Martinez and Councilmember Ryu’s offices met with Coalition members at the Los Angeles Regional Meeting on February 21, at UFCW 770 to give input to their proposal for fully paid family leave for the city of Los Angeles. (Note: the benefit is not for residents, but for anyone who works in LA and pays into SDI) The proposal would require employers to "top off" PFL benefits in order to provide fully paid leave to LA workers.  There will be a first reading at City Hall on March 19th. This is exciting news, and LA Coalition members are in the process of figuring out if this expansion push will include caregivers as well. We hope to work together with our SF/Berkeley members, Legal Aid at Work, and incorporate what they learned from implementing those ordinances. Marcella Cortez, District Director for Congressman Jimmy Gomez’s office, also joined the meeting in support of the Coalition. A champion of Paid Family Leave and friend of the Coalition, Gomez authored AB 908 and successfully increased the PFL wage replacement rate from 55% to 60% or 70% as a member of the California Assembly.  Now, as a Member of Congress he will continue the fight for a national paid leave policy through his support of the FAMILY Act. The Coalition looks forward to working with Gomez’s office on these issues, and conducting outreach and education on these important strides in PFL.   Continue reading
